Uses and Benefits of AFOGATRAN 75MG CAPSULE (DABIGATRAN ETEXILATE 75MG)
Dabigatran Etexilate is used to prevent and treat blood clots in various medical conditions.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- To reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) not caused by a heart valve problem
- To treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs)
- To prevent blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, as advised by your doctor
HOW IT WORKS
- It blocks a clotting protein called thrombin in the blood
- By blocking thrombin, it stops blood from clotting too easily
- This lowers the chance of dangerous clots forming in blood vessels, the heart, or lungs
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It is not used for people with mechanical heart valves
- It is not a painkiller and does not treat pain or inflammation
- It is not used to dissolve an existing large clot immediately like emergency clot-busting drugs
- It should not be used casually without a doctor's prescription and monitoring

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS
- Stomach upset or indigestion
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Mild bleeding, such as nosebleeds or bleeding gums

- Skin rash or itching
- Abdominal pain
- Anaemia (low red blood cells) from minor blood loss
SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY
- Blood in urine or stool, or black tarry stools
- Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
- Unusual or heavy bleeding that does not stop
- Sudden severe headache, weakness, or difficulty speaking (signs of bleeding in the brain)
- Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing
- Unexplained bruising or prolonged bleeding from cuts

How to Use AFOGATRAN 75MG CAPSULE (DABIGATRAN ETEXILATE 75MG)
HOW TO TAKE IT
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day
- Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water; do not open, crush, break, or chew it
- Can be taken with or without food, as advised
- Try to take it at the same time each day to maintain steady levels in the blood
- Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can increase clot risk
IF YOU MISS A DOSE
- Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
- If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
- If unsure, contact your doctor or pharmacist for guidance
STORAGE
- Store at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight
- Keep the capsules in their original blister pack until ready to use
- Keep out of reach and sight of children
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
- Are allergic to dabigatran or any ingredient in the capsule
- Have active, serious bleeding
- Have a mechanical heart valve
- Have severe kidney disease, unless specifically advised by your doctor

- Have kidney or liver problems
- Have had a stomach ulcer or previous bleeding problems
- Are going for surgery or dental treatment soon

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT
- Other blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines like aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin

- Herbal supplements like St John's Wort
- Painkillers such as NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) which may increase bleeding risk
