Uses and Benefits of ALBUCID 30% DROP (SULPHACETAMIDE 0.3 W/V)

Sulphacetamide 0.3% w/v eye drops are used to treat bacterial infections affecting the eye and surrounding structures.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Bacterial conjunctivitis (red, watery, sticky eyes)
• Corneal ulcers caused by susceptible bacteria
• Blepharitis (inflammation of eyelid margins) due to bacteria
• As an additional treatment along with other eye care measures for eye infections

HOW IT WORKS

• It is a sulfonamide antibiotic that blocks a bacterial enzyme needed to make folic acid
• Without folic acid, bacteria cannot grow or multiply
• This helps clear the infection and reduces redness, discharge and irritation

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral eye infections such as common viral conjunctivitis
• Fungal eye infections
• Allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, watery eyes due to allergy)
• Glaucoma or dry eyes
• Injuries to the eye without infection

Side Effects of ALBUCID 30% DROP (SULPHACETAMIDE 0.3 W/V)

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Mild burning or stinging right after applying the drop
• Temporary blurred vision
• Watering of the eye
• Mild itching or irritation

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Redness of the eye lasting longer than usual
• Sensitivity to light
• Dryness or a gritty feeling in the eye

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe eye pain or swelling of the eye or eyelid
• Sudden decrease in vision
• Signs of allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing
• Severe redness that worsens instead of improving
• Pus or increased discharge despite using the drops

How to Use ALBUCID 30% DROP (SULPHACETAMIDE 0.3 W/V)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Use only in the eye, as directed by your doctor
• Wash your hands before using the drops
• Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid gently, and place the prescribed number of drops inside the pouch formed
• Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelid or any surface to prevent contamination
• Close your eye gently for a minute after applying to let the medicine spread
• If you wear contact lenses, remove them before use unless your doctor says otherwise
• Continue using for the full duration advised, even if symptoms improve early

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Apply the missed drop as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not apply two doses together to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight
• Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use
• Do not use the drops beyond the expiry date or beyond the discard period mentioned after opening (usually around 4 weeks)
• Keep out of reach of children

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to sulphacetamide, sulfa drugs, or any other ingredient in the drops
• Have had a severe allergic reaction to sulfonamide medicines in the past

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other eye drops containing silver-based preparations, as they may reduce effectiveness
• Other topical or oral sulfonamide medicines, due to increased risk of allergic reaction
• Any other eye medicine — always leave a gap of several minutes between different eye drops and inform your doctor about all products you are using
