This combination medicine is used to treat severe and multi-drug resistant bacterial infections that require hospital treatment and IV antibiotics.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Severe lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Gynaecological infections
- Blood infections (septicaemia)
- Infections in patients with weak immunity, when doctor decides it is needed
HOW IT WORKS
- Imipenem kills bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall
- Cilastatin blocks a kidney enzyme that would otherwise destroy imipenem before it works
- Together they give a broad range of antibacterial action against many resistant germs
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- Viral infections such as flu or common cold
- Fungal infections
- Minor infections that can be treated with oral antibiotics
- As a first-choice or routine antibiotic without medical necessity

- Signs of severe skin reaction such as blistering or peeling skin
- Unusual bleeding or bruising

HOW TO TAKE IT

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

- Valproic acid or sodium valproate (can reduce its effectiveness, raising seizure risk)
- Ganciclovir (increased risk of seizures)
- Other antibiotics being used simultaneously
- Blood thinners like warfarin (may affect bleeding tendency)
- Any other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal products you are taking
