Atracurium Besylate is used to relax muscles during surgery and to assist with mechanical ventilation in intensive care.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- To relax skeletal muscles during surgical procedures under general anaesthesia
- To help insert a breathing tube (endotracheal intubation)
- To keep patients still and relaxed while on a ventilator in ICU
HOW IT WORKS
- It blocks the transmission of nerve signals at the junction between nerves and muscles
- This causes temporary paralysis of skeletal muscles, allowing surgeons to operate easily
- Its effect wears off naturally over time as the body breaks it down
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It is not a pain-relief medicine or sedative
- It does not put the patient to sleep on its own
- It is not used for long-term or home treatment of any condition
