Uses and Benefits of BACIGYL SYRUP 60ML (NORFLOXACIN + METRONIDAZOLE)

This medicine is mainly used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by a mix of bacteria and protozoa.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Infectious diarrhoea
• Bacillary and amoebic dysentery
• Traveller's diarrhoea
• Intestinal infections caused by mixed bacterial and protozoal organisms

HOW IT WORKS

• Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that stops bacteria from multiplying by blocking enzymes needed for their DNA replication
• Metronidazole kills protozoa like Entamoeba and anaerobic bacteria by damaging their DNA
• Together they cover a broad range of organisms commonly responsible for gut infections in India

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral diarrhoea or common stomach upset from food
• Urinary tract infections alone (different regimen usually needed)
• Respiratory infections like cold, cough or flu
• Long-term prevention of diarrhoea

This medicine should only be used for the condition and duration advised by your doctor, as unnecessary use can lead to antibiotic resistance.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Metallic taste in mouth
• Loss of appetite
• Stomach discomfort or cramps
• Diarrhoea

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Dizziness or headache
• Dry mouth
• Skin rash or itching
• Darkening of urine colour
• Sleep disturbance

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing
• Severe diarrhoea with blood (may indicate a new infection)
• Tendon pain, swelling or sudden difficulty moving a joint
• Numbness, tingling or weakness in hands or feet
• Seizures or severe confusion
• Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling

How to Use BACIGYL SYRUP 60ML (NORFLOXACIN + METRONIDAZOLE)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually before meals
• Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water
• Do not crush or chew unless your doctor or pharmacist tells you to
• Complete the full course even if you feel better, to prevent the infection from returning or becoming resistant
• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after finishing, as metronidazole can cause severe reactions with alcohol
• Drink plenty of fluids, especially if you have diarrhoea

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

This medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription in India.

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to norfloxacin, metronidazole, or other quinolone antibiotics
• Have a history of tendon problems linked to quinolone antibiotics
• Are in the first trimester of pregnancy
• Are a child, unless specifically advised by a doctor

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have epilepsy or any seizure disorder
• Have liver or kidney disease
• Have a nerve disorder or myasthenia gravis
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of heart rhythm problems
• Are diabetic or on other regular medicines

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Blood thinners like warfarin
• Antacids, iron or calcium supplements (can reduce absorption of norfloxacin)
• Other medicines affecting heart rhythm
• Lithium
• Disulfiram or other alcohol-deterrent medicines
• Theophylline

Can I drink alcohol while taking this medicine?

No, alcohol should be avoided during treatment and for at least two days after, as it can cause severe nausea, flushing and vomiting with metronidazole.

Can I stop the medicine once my diarrhoea improves?

No, complete the full course as prescribed even if symptoms improve, to fully clear the infection.

Is this medicine safe during pregnancy?
