This medicine is used to prevent excessive bleeding (postpartum haemorrhage) after childbirth.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Prevention of heavy bleeding after delivery, especially after caesarean section
• Helping the uterus contract firmly after the baby is delivered

HOW IT WORKS

• It acts like the natural hormone oxytocin, binding to uterine muscle receptors
• It causes the uterus to contract strongly and stay contracted for a longer time
• This reduces blood loss by closing off blood vessels in the uterine wall

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used to induce or speed up labour
• It is not used before the baby is delivered
• It is not a treatment for bleeding unrelated to childbirth
• It is not used in men or non-pregnant women

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Flushing or feeling of warmth
• Headache
• Low blood pressure with dizziness
• Abdominal or back pain
• Metallic taste in mouth

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Chest pain or tightness
• Anaemia
• Tremors
• Itching or rash
• Anxiety

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips or throat
• Difficulty breathing
• Irregular heartbeat or severe chest pain
• Sudden severe drop in blood pressure with fainting
• Signs of fluid overload such as severe swelling or breathlessness

HOW TO TAKE IT

• This medicine is given only as an injection by a trained healthcare professional, usually into a vein

• You will not be asked to take this medicine at home or by mouth
• The exact timing and administration is decided by your doctor based on your delivery

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• This does not apply, as it is a one-time hospital-administered injection given at the time of delivery
• If bleeding is not adequately controlled, your doctor will decide on further treatment

STORAGE

• This medicine is stored and handled by hospital staff or pharmacy, not by patients at home
• It is usually kept refrigerated or as per manufacturer instructions, protected from light
• Patients do not need to store or manage this medicine themselves

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
