- Meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord lining)
- Infections of the abdomen, including peritonitis
- Blood infections (septicaemia)
- Infections related to gynaecological and obstetric conditions
- Prevention of infection during certain surgeries
HOW IT WORKS
- Cefotaxime belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics
- It works by attacking the cell wall of bacteria, weakening and destroying them
- This stops the bacteria from multiplying and spreading further in the body
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It does not work against viral infections such as common cold or flu
- It is not used for fungal infections
- It should not be used for infections known to be caused by bacteria resistant to cefotaxime

- Seizures or confusion
- Severe skin reactions such as blistering or peeling skin
