Darbepoetin Alfa is used to treat anaemia, a condition where the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Anaemia caused by chronic kidney disease, in patients on dialysis or not
• Anaemia caused by chemotherapy in cancer patients
• Reducing the need for blood transfusions in some anaemic patients

HOW IT WORKS

• It mimics the natural hormone erythropoietin
• It stimulates bone marrow cells to produce more red blood cells
• Increased red blood cells improve oxygen delivery to body tissues
• This helps reduce tiredness, weakness and breathlessness caused by anaemia

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used for anaemia caused by iron, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency unless these are corrected first
• It is not a treatment for cancer itself
• It is not used for general fatigue without a diagnosed blood disorder
• It is not a substitute for blood transfusion in emergency severe anaemia

• Signs of blood clots such as chest pain, leg swelling, or sudden breathlessness
• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips or throat, and difficulty breathing
• Seizures or fits
• Severe headache with confusion, suggesting very high blood pressure
• Signs of pure red cell aplasia such as sudden worsening anaemia despite treatment
• Stroke symptoms such as weakness on one side, slurred speech

HOW TO TAKE IT

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have pure red cell aplasia caused by previous erythropoietin therapy
