Ceftriaxone 1.5gm is used to treat serious bacterial infections in different parts of the body.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia
- Infections of the ear, nose and throat
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Abdominal infections
- Meningitis (infection of brain and spinal cord lining)
- Infections of the blood (septicaemia)
- Sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea
- Prevention of infection before and during surgery
HOW IT WORKS
- It belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins
- It works by stopping bacteria from building their protective cell wall
- This weakens and destroys the bacteria, clearing the infection
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It does not work against viral infections such as common cold or flu
- It is not used for fungal infections
- It should not be used to treat infections that are known to be resistant to it
- It is not a painkiller and does not treat symptoms directly, only the underlying infection

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS
- Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
- Nausea

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY
- Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, and difficulty breathing
- Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling
- Severe watery or bloody diarrhoea that does not stop
- Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
- Signs of gallbladder or kidney problems such as severe stomach pain or reduced urine output
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Seizures or fits

HOW TO TAKE IT
- This medicine is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a trained healthcare professional

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

STORAGE
- Store as directed on the pack, generally in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Keep out of reach of children
- Once prepared for injection, it should be used as instructed by the healthcare provider and not stored for later use
- Do not use if the injection solution looks discoloured or has particles in it

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
- Are allergic to ceftriaxone or other cephalosporin antibiotics
