Fosphenytoin is used mainly for the emergency treatment and control of seizures (fits), particularly a condition called status epilepticus, where seizures are prolonged or occur one after another.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Control of status epilepticus (continuous or repeated seizures)
• Prevention and treatment of seizures during or after neurosurgery
• Short-term substitute for oral phenytoin when a patient cannot take medicines by mouth

HOW IT WORKS

• It converts in the body into phenytoin, the active anticonvulsant
• Phenytoin stabilises the electrical activity of nerve cells in the brain
• This reduces the spread of abnormal electrical signals that cause seizures

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used for routine, long-term daily seizure control at home
• It is not a painkiller or sedative
• It is not used for absence seizures (petit mal), and may worsen them
• It is not used for headaches, migraine, or anxiety

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Dizziness

• Slurred speech

• Irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or very slow heartbeat
• Severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin
• Swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
• Severe drop in blood pressure or fainting
• Signs of liver problems such as yellowing of skin or eyes
• Unusual bleeding or bruising

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
