Uses and Benefits of ISOFER VIAL (IRON ISOMALTOSIDE 100 MG/ML)

This medicine is used to treat iron deficiency, including iron deficiency anaemia, in adults who cannot tolerate or absorb oral iron, or who need iron replaced quickly.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treating iron deficiency anaemia caused by chronic blood loss, poor absorption, pregnancy, or chronic kidney disease
• Correcting iron deficiency when oral iron tablets are not effective or cause intolerable side effects
• Restoring iron levels quickly before surgery in some cases

HOW IT WORKS

• Supplies iron directly into the bloodstream in a form the body can use
• Iron is taken up by the bone marrow to produce haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen
• Gradually replenishes the body's iron stores over time

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for anaemia not caused by iron deficiency, such as anaemia from vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
• Not a treatment for infections or chronic diseases themselves, only the iron deficiency linked to them
• Not meant for routine iron supplementation when oral iron works well
• Not for self-administration at home

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Muscle or joint pain
• Fever or flushing

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of allergic reaction such as rash, itching, swelling of face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing
• Severe drop in blood pressure, fainting or feeling very weak
• Chest pain or fast heartbeat
• Severe pain or discoloration around the injection site
• Persistent low phosphate levels causing bone or muscle pain

HOW TO TAKE IT

• This medicine is given only by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, never self-administered
• It is usually given as a slow injection into a vein or as an infusion (drip) over a set period
• The dose and number of sessions will be decided by your doctor based on your iron levels and body weight
• You may be monitored for a short period after the injection to watch for any reaction

• Do not try to make up for a missed dose on your own

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have had a known allergy to iron isomaltoside or similar iron injections in the past
• Have iron overload conditions such as haemochromatosis
• Have anaemia not caused by iron deficiency
• Have an active, serious infection
