Labetalol HCl is mainly used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), including high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Treating high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Managing high blood pressure during pregnancy, under specialist care
- Controlling severely raised blood pressure in hospital settings, as decided by the doctor
HOW IT WORKS
- It blocks certain receptors (alpha and beta) in blood vessels and heart
- This relaxes and widens blood vessels, reducing the workload on the heart
- It slows the heart rate slightly and lowers blood pressure
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- Not a painkiller and does not treat headaches directly
- Not used for common cold, fever or infections
- Not a first-choice medicine for anxiety, though it may occasionally have off-label use decided only by a doctor
- Not meant for occasional or as-needed use; it needs regular daily use as advised

HOW TO TAKE IT
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with water
- Can be taken with or without food, but try to be consistent
- Do not stop suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can cause a sudden rise in blood pressure
- Take at the same time(s) each day to maintain steady levels in the body
- Continue taking it even if you feel well, since blood pressure control needs regular use
IF YOU MISS A DOSE
- Take it as soon as you remember
- If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
- Do not take double the dose to make up for a missed one
- If you miss doses frequently, inform your doctor
