Insulin Detemir is used to manage diabetes mellitus in adults and children who need insulin therapy.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Long-term control of blood sugar in type 1 diabetes
• Long-term control of blood sugar in type 2 diabetes when other treatments are not enough
• Used along with mealtime (short-acting) insulin or oral diabetes medicines in some patients

HOW IT WORKS

• It is a long-acting basal insulin analogue that mimics the body's natural background insulin
• It helps cells absorb glucose from the blood, lowering blood sugar levels
• Its effect lasts for a prolonged period, giving steady control between meals and overnight

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for treating diabetic ketoacidosis as a rapid-acting emergency insulin
• Not a treatment for occasional high blood sugar spikes after meals alone

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
• Redness, swelling or itching at the injection site
• Weight gain

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Changes in fat tissue under the skin at injection site (lipodystrophy)
• Swelling of hands or feet
• Temporary blurred vision when starting treatment

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of severe low blood sugar such as confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness
• Signs of allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, or difficulty breathing
• Very low blood pressure or rapid heartbeat
• Severe skin reaction at injection site that does not improve

How to Use LEVEMIR FLEXPENS (INSULIN DETEMIR (100IU))

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Inject under the skin (subcutaneously) into the thigh, upper arm, or abdomen as instructed by your doctor
• Do not inject into a vein or muscle
• Rotate the injection site each time to avoid skin problems
• Take at the same time(s) each day as prescribed
• Do not change your dose or timing without consulting your doctor
• Check blood sugar levels regularly as advised

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember, but if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Contact your doctor if you are unsure about what to do

STORAGE

• Store unopened pens/vials in a refrigerator, away from the freezer compartment
• Once in use, the pen/vial can usually be kept at room temperature away from heat and light, as per the label
• Do not freeze; discard if it has been frozen
• Keep out of reach of children
• Always check the insulin appearance before use; discard if discoloured or has particles

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
