Nicorandil is mainly used for the long-term prevention and treatment of angina (chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle).

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Prevention of angina attacks
• Long-term treatment of stable angina
• Sometimes used when other angina medicines are not suitable or not fully effective

HOW IT WORKS

• Opens potassium channels in blood vessel walls, causing them to relax and widen
• Also has a nitrate-like effect that dilates veins and arteries
• This reduces the workload on the heart and improves blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used to treat a sudden heart attack
• Not a painkiller for non-heart-related chest pain
• Not used for high blood pressure alone

• Blood in stools or black stools
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, or throat, and difficulty breathing
• Severe dizziness or fainting
• Rapid or irregular heartbeat

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice a day
• Swallow the tablet with water; it can be taken with or without food
• Do not crush or chew unless your doctor or pharmacist advises so
• Take it at the same times each day to maintain steady effect
• Do not stop suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this may worsen angina

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as usual
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, sunlight, and moisture
• Keep the tablets in their original packaging until use
• Keep out of reach and sight of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to nicorandil or any ingredient in the tablet
• Have low blood pressure or are in cardiogenic shock
• Have heart failure with low fluid levels (hypovolemia)
• Are taking medicines for erectile dysfunction such as sildenafil or similar drugs

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have a history of stomach or intestinal ulcers
• Have liver or kidney problems
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding

• Sildenafil, tadalafil, or other PDE5 inhibitors (dangerous fall in blood pressure)
