This medicine is used to treat serious bacterial infections in different parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Severe infections of the lungs (pneumonia)
• Infections of the abdomen (stomach area)
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Infections of the blood (bacteremia)
• Gynaecological infections
• Infections in hospitalised or critically ill patients, including those on ventilators

HOW IT WORKS

• Piperacillin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria by weakening their cell walls
• Tazobactam blocks certain bacterial enzymes that would otherwise destroy piperacillin
• Together they widen the range of bacteria this medicine can treat, including some resistant strains

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as common cold, flu, or most sore throats
• Fungal infections
• Minor infections that can be treated with oral antibiotics
• Preventing infection when there is no evidence of bacterial disease (unless specifically advised by your doctor)

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Reduced urine output or swelling (signs of kidney problems)
• Seizures or confusion
• Severe skin reactions with blistering or peeling
