This composition is used to treat iron deficiency anaemia, a condition where the body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treating iron deficiency anaemia when iron tablets or syrups are not tolerated or not effective
• Treating anaemia in patients with chronic kidney disease
• Treating anaemia in patients with heavy uterine bleeding or during pregnancy when oral iron fails
• Correcting iron deficiency in patients with inflammatory bowel disease affecting iron absorption

HOW IT WORKS

• Supplies iron directly into the bloodstream in a form the body can use
• Iron is used by the bone marrow to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen
• Helps restore iron stores faster than oral iron in cases of severe deficiency

• Not used for anaemia caused by vitamin B12 or folate deficiency

• Flushing
• Low phosphate levels in blood

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips or throat, or severe rash
• Chest pain or severe fall in blood pressure during or after infusion
• Severe skin staining at injection site that does not go away
• Unusual weakness, muscle pain or bone pain suggesting low phosphate levels
• Fainting or severe dizziness during infusion

HOW TO TAKE IT

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have liver disease

• Oral iron supplements taken around the same time may reduce absorption of oral iron
