Ceftazidime is used to treat serious bacterial infections in different parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Infections of the lungs and chest, such as pneumonia
• Urinary tract infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Infections of bones and joints
• Infections in the abdomen
• Infections of the blood (septicaemia)
• Meningitis caused by certain bacteria

HOW IT WORKS

• It belongs to a group of antibiotics called cephalosporins
• It stops bacteria from building their protective outer wall
• Without this wall, the bacteria are unable to survive and multiply
• This helps clear the infection from the body

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It does not work against viral infections like flu or common cold
• It is not used for fungal infections
• It should not be used to treat infections not confirmed or suspected to be bacterial
• It is not a pain reliever or fever medicine on its own

• Yellowing of skin or eyes
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Seizures or confusion
• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling
