This medicine is used to treat diabetes mellitus (both type 1 and type 2) by helping control blood sugar levels over long periods.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Long-term control of blood sugar in type 1 diabetes
• Long-term control of blood sugar in type 2 diabetes
• Used along with other insulins or diabetes medicines as advised by your doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• It is a basal (background) insulin that acts slowly and steadily over 24 hours or more
• It helps body cells absorb glucose from blood, lowering blood sugar levels
• It mimics the natural low-level insulin release that happens between meals and overnight

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for treating diabetic ketoacidosis as an emergency rescue insulin
• Not a substitute for fast-acting or meal-time insulin when quick sugar control is needed
• Not used to treat type of diabetes caused by pregnancy without specific doctor guidance
• Not meant for occasional or one-time blood sugar spikes

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
• Redness, swelling or itching at the injection site
• Weight gain

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Swelling in hands or feet
• Thickening or pitting of skin at injection site (lipodystrophy) if injection site is not rotated
• Itching or rash over the body

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of severe low blood sugar such as confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness
• Signs of severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of face/lips/tongue, or widespread rash
• Rapid weight gain, shortness of breath or swelling of legs, which may suggest fluid retention or heart problems
• Chest pain or irregular heartbeat

How to Use TRESIBA PENFIL (INSULIN DEGLUDEC (100IU))

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous), usually in the thigh, upper arm or abdomen
• Usually taken once daily at the same time each day, as prescribed by your doctor
• Rotate the injection site each time to avoid skin thickening
• Do not mix with other insulins in the same syringe unless advised by your doctor
• Check the insulin looks clear and colourless before injecting
• Follow the injection technique taught by your doctor or nurse

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If a full day has passed, do not double the dose; contact your doctor for advice
• Maintain a consistent daily routine to avoid missed doses

STORAGE

• Store unopened pens/vials in a refrigerator, away from the freezer compartment
• Once in use, keep at room temperature as per the label, away from direct heat and sunlight
• Do not freeze; discard if it has been frozen
• Keep out of reach of children
• Discard the pen or vial after the labelled in-use period even if some insulin remains

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are having an episode of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
• Are allergic to insulin degludec or any of its ingredients

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have kidney or liver disease
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding

• Other diabetes medicines including oral tablets and insulins

• Beta-blockers, which can mask signs of low blood sugar
• Certain antidepressants and antipsychotics
• Alcohol, which can increase risk of low blood sugar
