Uses and Benefits of ZILSA CREAM (TIOCONAZOLE (6.5% W/W))

Tioconazole 6.5% w/w is mainly used to treat fungal infections of the vagina caused by Candida (yeast infections).

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of vaginal yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis)
• Relief of itching, burning, redness and irritation caused by vaginal fungal infection
• Reducing abnormal vaginal discharge caused by fungal infection

HOW IT WORKS

• It belongs to a class of antifungal medicines called imidazoles
• It damages the fungal cell membrane, which stops the fungus from growing and eventually kills it
• Applied directly to the affected area, it acts locally to clear the infection

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used for bacterial vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis
• It is not used for sexually transmitted infections like trichomoniasis or chlamydia
• It is not meant for oral or skin fungal infections unless specifically advised by a doctor
• It is not a contraceptive and does not prevent pregnancy or STIs

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Mild burning or stinging at the site of application
• Itching or irritation of the vagina or vulva
• Local redness or discomfort

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Vaginal discharge or discomfort during urination
• Headache
• Abdominal cramping

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe itching, swelling or rash spreading beyond the application area
• Signs of allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of face or lips
• Severe pain, blistering or ulceration in the vaginal area
• Worsening of symptoms instead of improvement after a few days

How to Use ZILSA CREAM (TIOCONAZOLE (6.5% W/W))

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Use only as directed by your doctor, usually as a single application at bedtime
• Wash and dry your hands before and after application
• Insert the applicator or apply the ointment into the vagina as instructed on the pack or by your doctor
• Avoid using tampons, douches or other vaginal products during treatment unless advised
• Avoid sexual intercourse until the infection has cleared, or use protection as advised by your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Since this is often a single-dose treatment, contact your doctor if you missed applying it or are unsure whether you applied it correctly
• If it is part of a multi-day course, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next one
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to tioconazole or other imidazole antifungal medicines
• Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
• Have not been diagnosed with a fungal infection by a doctor

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Are pregnant or planning pregnancy
• Are breastfeeding
• Have recurrent or frequent vaginal infections
• Have diabetes, as this can increase risk of fungal infections
• Are using other vaginal medicines or products

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other vaginal creams, gels or suppositories used at the same time
• Latex condoms and diaphragms, as the oil-based ointment may weaken latex products
• Inform your doctor of all medicines, supplements or vaginal products you are using
