Acenocoumarol is prescribed to prevent and treat blood clots in conditions where clotting risk is high.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Preventing blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation (irregular heart rhythm)
• Treating and preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
• Preventing and treating pulmonary embolism (clot in the lungs)
• Preventing clot formation in patients with artificial heart valves
• Preventing clots after certain heart or vascular conditions, as advised by your doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks the action of vitamin K in the liver
• Vitamin K is needed to make several clotting factors
• This slows down the blood's ability to form clots
• Effect is monitored using a blood test called INR (International Normalised Ratio)

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for immediate emergency clot dissolving (it is not a clot-buster)
• Not a painkiller or anti-inflammatory medicine
• Not used to treat infections
• Not recommended for use during pregnancy

How to Use Acenocoumarol (1mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day at the same time
• Swallow the tablet with water; it can be taken with or without food
• Do not change the dose on your own, even if you feel well
• Regular blood tests (INR) are needed to adjust your dose correctly
• Keep all follow-up appointments for blood testing
• Avoid sudden major changes in your diet, especially leafy green vegetables, without telling your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Severe headache, confusion, weakness on one side of body (signs of bleeding in the brain)
• Skin turning purple, painful, or developing blisters (a rare but serious reaction)
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, or difficulty breathing
