Acetazolamide is mainly used to treat raised pressure inside the eye (glaucoma) and to prevent or treat altitude sickness. It is also used in certain seizure disorders and conditions involving fluid retention.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Open-angle and secondary glaucoma to reduce eye pressure
• Prevention and treatment of acute mountain (altitude) sickness
• As an add-on treatment for certain types of epilepsy
• Management of fluid retention (edema) in some heart or drug-related conditions

HOW IT WORKS

• It blocks an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase
• This reduces the production of fluid inside the eye, lowering eye pressure
• It also changes the balance of acid and fluid in the body, which helps in altitude sickness and seizures

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller
• It is not used for common headaches unrelated to eye pressure or altitude
• It is not a first-line treatment for high blood pressure
• It should not be used casually without a doctor's evaluation of the underlying cause

How to Use Acetazolamide 250mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with food to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water
• Take it at the same time(s) each day to maintain a steady effect
• Do not increase or decrease the dose on your own
• Drink plenty of fluids during the day unless your doctor advises otherwise, to reduce the risk of kidney stones

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep in the original packaging until ready to use
• Keep out of reach of children and pets

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Tingling or numbness in hands, feet, or lips

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to acetazolamide or any sulfonamide-containing medicines

• Have adrenal gland failure (Addison's disease)
• Are in a state of severe metabolic acidosis
