• Managing high uric acid levels caused by certain cancer treatments (tumour lysis syndrome)
• Preventing recurrent gout attacks with continued long-term use

HOW IT WORKS

• Allopurinol blocks an enzyme called xanthine oxidase
• This enzyme is needed to produce uric acid in the body
• By blocking it, allopurinol lowers the amount of uric acid formed
• Lower uric acid levels reduce crystal formation in joints and kidneys over time

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It does not relieve pain during a sudden, active gout attack
• It is not a painkiller or anti-inflammatory medicine
• It should not be started during an acute gout flare as it can worsen symptoms temporarily
• It is not used for general joint pain unrelated to uric acid

How to Use Allopurinol 300mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily
• Take after food to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water
• Drink plenty of fluids through the day unless your doctor advises otherwise
• Do not stop the medicine even if you feel fine, as it works to prevent future attacks
• Continue taking it during a gout attack unless your doctor tells you to stop

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
