Cefpodoxime — Uses and Benefits

Cefpodoxime is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria affecting different parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

  • Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and sinusitis
  • Throat and tonsil infections
  • Ear infections
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Certain infections of the reproductive tract when prescribed by a doctor

HOW IT WORKS

  • It belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics
  • It stops bacteria from forming a proper cell wall
  • Without a proper cell wall, bacteria cannot survive and the infection clears

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

  • It does not work against viral infections like common cold or flu
  • It is not used for fungal infections
  • It should not be used to self-treat fever without knowing the cause
  • It is not effective against all types of bacteria, only susceptible ones

Always complete the full course as prescribed, even if you feel better earlier, to prevent the infection from returning or bacteria becoming resistant.

How to Use Cefpodoxime

HOW TO TAKE IT

  • Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor
  • It is usually taken with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset
  • Swallow tablets whole with water; shake the suspension well before use
  • Complete the full course even if you feel better
  • Take doses at evenly spaced intervals as advised

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

  • Take it as soon as you remember
  • If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one
  • Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one
  • Continue your normal dosing schedule after that

STORAGE

  • Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, light and moisture
  • Keep the oral suspension in the refrigerator if advised by the pharmacist, but do not freeze it
  • Discard any unused suspension after the period mentioned on the label
  • Keep out of reach of children

  • Yellowing of eyes or skin, or dark urine
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
