Esomeprazole — Uses and Benefits

Esomeprazole is used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and heartburn
• Stomach and duodenal ulcers
• Prevention of ulcers caused by long-term use of pain relief medicines (NSAIDs)
• Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions with excess acid production
• Along with antibiotics to help treat H. pylori infection

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks the acid pump in the stomach lining cells
• Reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces
• Helps heal irritation or ulcers in the food pipe, stomach, and intestine
• Relieves symptoms like heartburn, acid regurgitation, and stomach pain

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not a painkiller and does not relieve pain directly
• Not used for immediate relief of sudden acidity like an antacid
• Not effective for stomach infections unless combined with antibiotics as advised
• Not meant for long-term use without medical supervision

How to Use Esomeprazole

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor
• Usually taken once daily, at least 30-60 minutes before a meal
• Swallow the tablet or capsule whole with water; do not chew or crush unless your doctor says it is safe to do so
• If prescribed as a dispersible tablet, follow the instructions given for mixing with water
• Try to take it at the same time every day for best results
• Continue for the full duration advised by your doctor even if you feel better

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• If you miss doses often, set a daily reminder

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, light, and moisture
• Keep in the original packaging until ready to use
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea

• Constipation
• Gas or bloating

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Skin rash or itching
• Tiredness
• Disturbed sleep

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe or watery diarrhea that does not stop (may indicate intestinal infection)
• Signs of low magnesium such as muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or seizures
• Severe stomach pain
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Severe skin reaction, blistering, or swelling of face, lips, or throat
• Unexplained weight loss with difficulty swallowing
• Signs of very low vitamin B12 like tingling, numbness, or extreme tiredness with long-term use

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to esomeprazole or other PPIs
• Are taking certain HIV medicines like nelfinavir

• Have liver disease
• Have osteoporosis or a history of bone fractures

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Blood thinners like warfarin
• Clopidogrel (a heart medicine)

• Other acid-reducing medicines or antacids taken at the same time
