WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Psoriatic arthritis
• Ankylosing spondylitis
• Moderate to severe plaque psoriasis
• Certain forms of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, as decided by your doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks a protein called TNF-alpha that drives inflammation in the body
• Reduces swelling, pain and stiffness in joints
• Helps slow down joint damage over time
• Improves skin symptoms in psoriasis by reducing inflammation

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller for everyday aches like headache or muscle strain
• It is not used for infections, since it lowers immune defence
• It does not cure the underlying autoimmune disease, it only controls symptoms
• It is not a first-choice treatment for mild or short-term joint pain

How to Use Etanercept 25 mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous), usually in the thigh, abdomen or upper arm
• Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor regarding frequency and duration
• Your doctor or nurse will train you on the correct injection technique if self-injecting at home
• Rotate injection sites to avoid skin irritation
• Do not shake the injection; let it reach room temperature before use if instructed
• Wash hands before and after handling the injection

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take or administer the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the next scheduled dose
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one
• Contact your doctor for guidance on adjusting the schedule

STORAGE

• Store in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C, do not freeze
• Keep the injection in its original carton to protect from light
• Do not use if the liquid is cloudy, discoloured or has particles
• Keep out of reach of children
• Dispose of used needles and syringes safely as advised by your pharmacist

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of serious infection such as high fever, chills, persistent cough or wound that will not heal
• Symptoms of tuberculosis such as prolonged cough, weight loss or night sweats
• Unusual bleeding, bruising, or signs of low blood counts
• Difficulty breathing, swelling of face or throat, or severe allergic reaction
• Signs of liver problems such as yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine
• New or worsening nerve problems such as numbness, tingling or vision changes
• Symptoms of heart failure such as severe breathlessness or swelling of legs

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to etanercept or any of its components
• Have a active serious infection such as sepsis
• Have untreated active tuberculosis

• Have a history of tuberculosis or have been exposed to someone with TB
• Have recurring infections or a weakened immune system
• Have hepatitis B or C or other liver disease
• Have heart failure or other heart conditions

• Are scheduled for any vaccination, especially live vaccines
