Fondaparinux 7.5mg is used to prevent and treat blood clots that can form in the deep veins of the legs or travel to the lungs.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after major surgery, such as hip or knee replacement
• Treatment of DVT and pulmonary embolism
• Prevention of clot formation in certain acute illnesses requiring hospitalisation
• Used in some cases of unstable angina or heart attack management, as decided by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks Factor Xa, a protein needed in the blood clotting process
• Reduces the ability of blood to form new clots
• Helps prevent existing clots from becoming larger

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for routine pain relief
• Not a treatment for infections
• Not used to dissolve existing large clots quickly (it prevents further clotting, it is not a clot-buster)
• Not for use without proper medical supervision and monitoring

How to Use Fondaparinux (7.5mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous), usually in the abdomen area
• Administered only by a trained healthcare professional or as taught by your doctor/nurse
• Take it at the same time each day as prescribed
• Do not inject into a muscle or vein
• Do not rub the injection site after administration
• Continue for the full duration advised by your doctor, even if you feel well

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Contact your doctor as soon as possible for guidance
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one
• Do not decide on your own to skip or delay doses

STORAGE

• Store below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and heat
• Do not freeze
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use if the solution appears discoloured or contains particles

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Bruising or pain at the injection site
• Mild bleeding, such as nosebleeds or bleeding gums
• Low red blood cell count (anaemia)
• Nausea

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Skin rash or itching
• Swelling in hands or feet
• Fever
• Low blood pressure

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Unusual or heavy bleeding, including blood in urine or stools
• Black, tarry stools or vomiting blood
• Sudden severe headache, confusion, or vision changes (signs of bleeding in the brain)
• Severe allergic reaction: swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing, severe rash
• Sudden weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are actively bleeding or have a bleeding disorder
• Have severe kidney impairment (as advised by your doctor)
• Have a history of allergic reaction to fondaparinux
• Have a very low platelet count with a positive antibody test related to heparin
• Have a heart infection (bacterial endocarditis)
