WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Control of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in type 2 diabetes
• Used along with diet and exercise when metformin alone does not control blood sugar

HOW IT WORKS

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea or upset stomach
• Diarrhoea or loose motions
• Loss of appetite
• Metallic taste in mouth
• Mild weight gain

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Swelling in feet or ankles
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if meals are skipped

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe stomach pain, vomiting, unusual tiredness or fast breathing (signs of lactic acidosis)
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Sudden weight gain, breathlessness or chest pain (signs of heart or fluid problems)
• Severe low blood sugar with confusion, sweating, shaking or fainting
• Bone fractures with minor injury (long-term use)
• Blood in urine or new bladder-related symptoms

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to gliclazide, pioglitazone, metformin or any ingredient in this medicine
• Have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
• Have severe kidney or liver disease
• Have heart failure or a history of bladder cancer
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless advised by your doctor

• Have any kidney, liver or heart problems
• Are scheduled for surgery or an X-ray/scan involving contrast dye
• Drink alcohol regularly
• Have a history of low blood sugar episodes
• Are elderly or have a poor appetite
• Have osteoporosis or history of fractures

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other diabetes medicines or insulin (risk of low blood sugar)
• Steroids, diuretics (water tablets) and certain blood pressure medicines
• NSAID painkillers like ibuprofen
• Contrast dye used in imaging tests
• Alcohol, which increases risk of lactic acidosis and low blood sugar
