Insulin Degludec is used to manage type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, adolescents and children as advised by the doctor.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling long-term (basal) blood sugar levels in type 1 diabetes
• Controlling blood sugar in type 2 diabetes when tablets alone are not enough
• Used along with mealtime (short-acting) insulin or other diabetes medicines as directed

HOW IT WORKS

• It is a long-acting insulin analogue that replaces the natural basal insulin the body needs
• It helps body cells absorb glucose from blood and use it for energy
• It has a slow, steady release giving stable sugar control for about 24 hours or more

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for treating diabetic ketoacidosis as an emergency treatment
• Not a substitute for mealtime insulin when rapid sugar control after food is needed
• Not used to treat low blood sugar
• Not recommended for occasional or one-time use

How to Use Insulin Degludec (100iu/ml)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Inject under the skin (subcutaneously) in the thigh, upper arm or abdomen as taught by your doctor or nurse
• Take it once daily at the same time each day, or as prescribed
• Rotate injection sites to avoid skin problems
• Do not inject into a vein or muscle
• Check blood sugar regularly as advised
• Do not mix with other insulins in the same syringe unless instructed

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If you miss it completely, take your next dose at the usual time the next day
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Contact your doctor if you are unsure what to do

STORAGE

• Store unopened pens/vials in a refrigerator (2-8°C), do not freeze
• Once in use, keep at room temperature (below 30°C) and use within the time mentioned on the label
• Keep away from direct heat and sunlight
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use if the solution looks cloudy, discoloured or has particles

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) with shakiness, sweating, hunger
• Redness, swelling or itching at the injection site
• Weight gain

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Swelling of hands, ankles or feet
• Changes in fat tissue under the skin at injection site (lipodystrophy)
• Skin rash or itching

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe hypoglycemia causing confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness
• Signs of severe allergic reaction such as breathlessness, swelling of face/throat, whole body rash
• Sudden vision changes
• Rapid heartbeat or chest discomfort

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Other diabetes medicines (oral or insulin) can increase risk of low blood sugar
• Beta-blockers, which can mask symptoms of low blood sugar
• Steroids and certain hormone medicines, which can raise blood sugar
• Alcohol, which can affect blood sugar control
