WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling high blood sugar in type 1 diabetes
• Controlling high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes when other treatments are not enough
• Long-term background (basal) blood sugar control, usually combined with meal-time insulin or tablets

HOW IT WORKS

• It is a basal insulin analogue that slowly releases insulin into the blood over about 24 hours
• It helps body cells absorb sugar from the blood and lowers blood glucose levels

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

How to Use Insulin Glargine 100iu

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Inject under the skin (subcutaneously) as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day
• Do not inject into a vein or muscle
• Rotate injection sites (thigh, abdomen, upper arm) to avoid skin problems
• Do not mix with other insulins in the same syringe unless your doctor specifically tells you to
• Check blood sugar regularly as advised by your doctor
• Follow the diet, exercise and monitoring plan given by your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day

STORAGE

• Store unopened pens/vials in a refrigerator (2-8°C), away from the freezer compartment

• Check for clear, colourless appearance before use; discard if cloudy or discoloured

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
• Redness, swelling or itching at the injection site
• Weight gain

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Changes in fat tissue under the skin at injection site (lipodystrophy)
• Swelling of hands or feet
• Temporary blurred vision when starting treatment

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of severe low blood sugar such as confusion, sweating, shaking, fainting or seizures
• Signs of allergic reaction such as rash all over the body, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips or throat
• Severe fast weight gain, swelling, or shortness of breath (possible heart failure sign)
• Persistent nausea, vomiting, stomach pain (possible ketoacidosis, especially if insulin is missed)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
