This medicine is used to treat high blood pressure and to help protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes who have kidney damage.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling high blood pressure (hypertension)
• Protecting kidney function in people with diabetic kidney disease
• Sometimes used alongside other blood pressure medicines

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks the action of a natural chemical called angiotensin II
• This relaxes and widens blood vessels
• Widened vessels reduce the pressure needed to pump blood, lowering blood pressure
• Reduced pressure in kidney blood vessels helps slow kidney damage

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not a painkiller or fever medicine
• Not used for immediate emergency lowering of dangerously high blood pressure
• Not a treatment for heart attack or stroke once it has occurred
• Not suitable for use in pregnancy

How to Use Irban 5mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day
• Can be taken with or without food
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Try to take it at the same time each day to build a habit
• Continue taking it even if you feel well, as blood pressure control needs regular use
• Do not stop suddenly without talking to your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep in original packaging until use
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Dizziness
• Tiredness or fatigue
• Headache
• Nausea

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Diarrhoea or indigestion
• Muscle cramps or joint pain
• Fast heartbeat
• Mild skin rash

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat with difficulty breathing
• Severe dizziness or fainting
• Signs of high potassium such as muscle weakness or irregular heartbeat
• Yellowing of skin or eyes (signs of liver problems)
• Very low urine output or swelling in legs/feet (signs of kidney problems)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are pregnant or planning pregnancy
• Are breastfeeding
• Have a known allergy to irbesartan or similar medicines
• Have severe liver disease without medical supervision

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have kidney disease or are on dialysis
• Have diabetes, especially if taking other blood pressure medicines
• Have low blood pressure or dehydration
• Have heart failure or narrowing of heart valves
• Are taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes
• Are scheduled for surgery or anaesthesia soon

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other blood pressure medicines including diuretics
• Potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen
• Lithium
• Other ARBs or ACE inhibitors used together
