Ispaghula Husk — Uses and Benefits

Ispaghula husk is mainly used to treat constipation and related bowel disorders by adding bulk to the stool and easing its passage.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

  • Constipation, including chronic constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation or alternating bowel habits
  • Maintaining regular bowel movements in piles (haemorrhoids) and after certain bowel surgeries
  • Softening stool in people who need to avoid straining, such as after childbirth or surgery

HOW IT WORKS

  • It absorbs water in the intestine and swells up, forming a soft, bulky gel-like mass
  • This bulk stimulates the bowel wall and helps trigger a natural urge to pass stool
  • It also helps hold water within the stool, making it softer and easier to pass

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

  • It is not a treatment for diarrhoea caused by infection
  • It does not treat the underlying cause of IBS, only helps manage bowel symptoms
  • It is not meant for rapid relief of severe constipation or bowel blockage
  • It is not a weight-loss medicine, though it is sometimes misused for this purpose

How to Use Ispaghula Husk

HOW TO TAKE IT

  • Take exactly as directed by your doctor or as mentioned on the product label
  • Mix the granules or powder well in a full glass of water, milk, or fruit juice
  • Drink it immediately after mixing, before it thickens too much
  • Drink an extra glass of water after taking the dose to help it work properly
  • Take at the same times each day, usually with or after meals
  • Do not take it just before going to bed, as it needs enough fluid intake to work safely
  • Continue drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day while using this medicine

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
  • If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
  • Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
