WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Relief of constipation
- Softening of stools for easier bowel movement

HOW IT WORKS
- It is not absorbed much from the gut and works locally in the large intestine
- It draws water into the bowel, softening the stool and making it easier to pass
- In the gut, it is broken down into acids that trap ammonia and help remove it from the body, reducing symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It is not a painkiller and does not treat abdominal pain
- It is not used for diarrhoea
- It is not an emergency treatment for sudden severe constipation with vomiting or bloating
- It does not treat the underlying liver disease itself, only the related confusion symptoms
How to Use Lactulose (2.5gm/5ml)
HOW TO TAKE IT
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually by mouth
- Can be taken with water or juice to improve taste, unless your doctor advises otherwise
- It may take a couple of days to show effect for constipation, so do not increase the dose on your own
- Continue drinking enough fluids while taking this medicine unless your doctor says otherwise
- Shake the bottle well before use if advised on the label
- Do not use for longer than advised by your doctor without follow-up
IF YOU MISS A DOSE
- Take it as soon as you remember
- If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
