This combination medicine is used in the treatment of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection, as part of a larger antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children, usually combined with other antiretroviral drugs
• Long-term management of HIV to control the virus and support immune function
• Reducing the risk of HIV progressing to AIDS

HOW IT WORKS

• Lamivudine and Zidovudine both belong to a class called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)
• They block an enzyme called reverse transcriptase that HIV needs to multiply
• By stopping viral replication, they lower the viral load in the blood
• This helps protect CD4 cells (immune cells) from further damage

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a cure for HIV or AIDS
• It does not prevent transmission of HIV to others
• It is not used to treat other viral infections like hepatitis B alone, influenza, or common cold
• It should not be used as a single standalone drug for complete HIV treatment without your doctor's full ART plan

How to Use Lamivudine + Zidovudine

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with or without food
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Take at the same times each day to maintain steady drug levels in the body
• Do not stop or change the dose without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better
• Continue taking other prescribed antiretroviral medicines along with this one as part of your full ART regimen

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your regular schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Try to set reminders to avoid missing doses, as skipping doses can lead to drug resistance

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Keep in the original container until it is time to take the dose

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea and vomiting
• Headache
• Tiredness or weakness
• Diarrhoea
• Loss of appetite
• Muscle pain

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Trouble sleeping
• Dizziness
• Skin rash
• Mild fever
• Nasal or cold-like symptoms

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Unusual bleeding, bruising, or pale skin (signs of blood disorders)
• Severe stomach pain, nausea with rapid breathing (possible lactic acidosis)
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (liver problems)
• Severe muscle weakness or pain
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing
• Unusual tiredness with shortness of breath (possible severe anaemia)

This medicine is a prescription-only medicine in India and should be used only under the supervision of a doctor experienced in treating HIV infection.

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to lamivudine, zidovudine, or any ingredient in the tablet
• Have very low neutrophil or haemoglobin (blood cell) counts, unless advised by your doctor
• Are already taking other medicines containing lamivudine, zidovudine, or stavudine

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have liver or kidney disease
• Have a history of blood disorders like anaemia
• Have pancreatitis or a history of it
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Are taking any other medicines, herbal products, or supplements

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other bone marrow suppressing drugs (like ganciclovir, chemotherapy medicines)
• Ribavirin
• Stavudine (should not be combined)
• Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (co-trimoxazole) at high doses
• Probenecid and certain pain relievers
