Levetiracetam 250mg — Uses and Benefits
Levetiracetam 250mg is mainly prescribed to control different types of seizures in people with epilepsy.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Partial (focal) seizures, either alone or with other anti-epileptic medicines
- Myoclonic seizures seen in certain types of epilepsy
- Generalised tonic-clonic seizures as add-on treatment
HOW IT WORKS
- It acts on a specific protein in brain cells (SV2A) that helps control the release of chemical messengers
- This helps reduce abnormal electrical activity in the brain that causes seizures
- It helps prevent seizures but does not cure epilepsy
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It is not a painkiller and should not be used for headaches or body pain
- It is not used for anxiety or sleep problems
- It should not be stopped suddenly for convenience as it may trigger seizures
This medicine should be taken regularly, even when you feel well, because stopping suddenly can cause seizures to return or worsen. Never change the dose or stop the medicine without consulting your doctor.
How to Use Levetiracetam 250mg
HOW TO TAKE IT
- Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice a day
- Swallow the tablet with a glass of water; it can be taken with or without food
- If using the syrup, use the measuring cup or spoon provided for accurate dosing
- Take it at the same times every day to maintain a steady level in the body
- Do not stop taking it suddenly, even if you feel better, unless your doctor advises
IF YOU MISS A DOSE
- Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
- If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
