• Managing high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes

HOW IT WORKS

• Mimics a natural hormone called GLP-1 that stimulates insulin release when blood sugar is high
• Slows down stomach emptying, which reduces appetite and food intake
• Reduces the amount of sugar released by the liver

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for type 1 diabetes
• Not used for diabetic ketoacidosis
• Not a substitute for insulin in insulin-dependent patients
• Not meant for quick or cosmetic weight loss without medical supervision

How to Use Liraglutide (6mg/ml)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous) in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm
• Usually taken once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed by your doctor
• Your doctor will start with a low dose and gradually increase it to reduce stomach-related side effects
• Rotate injection sites to avoid skin problems
• Do not inject into a vein or muscle
• Use only as directed; do not change the dose on your own

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• If a dose is missed and more than the recommended gap has passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store in a refrigerator, away from direct freezing
• Once in use, the pen may be kept at room temperature as per the manufacturer's instructions, away from heat and sunlight
• Do not freeze; discard if the medicine has been frozen

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea

• Severe stomach pain that spreads to the back, with or without vomiting (possible pancreatitis)
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat, or difficulty breathing
• Symptoms of low blood sugar such as sweating, shakiness, confusion, if used with other diabetes medicines
• Signs of dehydration due to persistent vomiting or diarrhoea
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (possible liver or gallbladder issue)
• Lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing (possible thyroid tumour)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
• Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
• Are allergic to liraglutide or any of its components
• Have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have a history of pancreatitis
• Have kidney or liver disease
• Have gallbladder disease
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of severe digestive problems
• Are taking other diabetes medicines, especially insulin or sulfonylureas

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Insulin and other diabetes medicines (risk of low blood sugar)
• Oral medicines that need fast stomach emptying to work properly
• Warfarin and other blood thinners
• Any other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal products - always inform your doctor of all medicines you take
