Meropenem is used to treat serious and often severe bacterial infections, especially those caused by bacteria resistant to other common antibiotics.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Severe pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infections
• Complicated urinary tract infections
• Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
• Intra-abdominal infections such as peritonitis
• Bacterial meningitis
• Sepsis (severe blood infection) caused by susceptible bacteria

HOW IT WORKS

• Meropenem belongs to the carbapenem class of antibiotics
• It works by stopping bacteria from building their protective cell wall
• Without a proper cell wall, bacteria cannot survive and eventually die
• It is effective against a wide range of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It does not work against viral infections such as flu, common cold or COVID-19
• It is not used for mild infections that can be treated with simpler antibiotics
• It should not be used as a preventive medicine without doctor's advice
• It is not effective against fungal infections

How to Use Meropenem

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Meropenem is given only by injection into a vein (IV), either as a slow push or an infusion over a set time
• It is administered by a trained healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic setting
• The dose, frequency and duration will be decided by your doctor based on the type and severity of infection
• Complete the full course as advised, even if you start feeling better before it is finished
• Do not stop treatment early unless your doctor tells you to

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Since this medicine is given by a healthcare provider, missed doses are unlikely
• If a dose is delayed or missed, inform the treating doctor or nurse promptly
• Do not try to self-administer or adjust doses at home

STORAGE

• Meropenem vials are stored and handled by hospital pharmacy staff
• It is generally stored at room temperature, away from direct light and heat, before reconstitution
• Once mixed for use, it should be used within the time specified by the manufacturer
• Patients do not usually need to store this medicine at home

Meropenem — Side Effects

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Diarrhoea
• Nausea or vomiting
• Headache
• Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
• Constipation

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Skin rash or itching
• Abnormal liver enzyme levels seen in blood tests
• Low platelet or blood cell counts
• Sore mouth or thrush infection

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, and difficulty breathing
• Severe or bloody diarrhoea, which may indicate a serious gut infection
• Seizures or fits, especially in people with kidney problems
• Signs of severe skin reaction such as blistering, peeling or widespread rash
• Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
• Unusual bleeding, bruising or signs of infection due to blood count changes

Meropenem — Safety Information and Precautions

Meropenem is a prescription-only medicine in India and must be used strictly under medical supervision, usually in a hospital setting.

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to meropenem or other carbapenem antibiotics
• Have had a severe allergic reaction to penicillins or cephalosporins in the past (inform your doctor, as cross-reaction is possible)

• Have kidney disease, as the dose may need adjustment

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Valproic acid or sodium valproate (used for epilepsy) — meropenem can reduce its levels and increase seizure risk
• Probenecid — can increase meropenem levels in the blood
• Other antibiotics or medicines affecting the kidneys
• Blood thinners, as combined effects should be monitored
