Mesalazine 1.2g is prescribed for people with inflammatory conditions of the large intestine, most commonly ulcerative colitis.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treating active mild to moderate ulcerative colitis
• Maintaining remission (preventing flare-ups) in ulcerative colitis
• Sometimes used in related bowel inflammatory conditions as advised by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Reduces inflammation directly in the lining of the colon and rectum
• Blocks chemical messengers in the body that cause swelling, irritation and tissue damage in the gut
• Helps reduce symptoms like loose motions, blood in stool and abdominal cramps

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for infectious diarrhoea caused by bacteria or viruses
• Not a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) without inflammation
• Not a painkiller and should not be used for general stomach pain unrelated to bowel inflammation
• Not effective for Crohn's disease flares in all patients unless specifically prescribed for that purpose

How to Use Mesalazine 1.2g

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with food
• Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew unless your doctor says it is fine
• Try to take it at the same time(s) each day for best effect
• Continue taking it for the full duration advised, even if you feel better, since stopping early can cause a relapse

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Keep in the original container until it is time to take the dose

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Stomach pain or discomfort

• Skin rash or itching

• Joint pain
• Hair thinning

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Unusual bruising, bleeding, or signs of low blood count (extreme tiredness, pale skin, frequent infections)
• Severe worsening of diarrhoea or blood in stool (possible sign of a rare bowel reaction)
• Chest pain, breathlessness, or swelling (signs of heart or lung inflammation)
• Reduced urine output or swelling of legs (possible kidney problem)
• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
