Methoxsalen U.S.P — Uses and Benefits

Methoxsalen is mainly used along with ultraviolet A (UVA) light treatment, known as PUVA therapy, for certain skin disorders.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Psoriasis that has not responded well to other treatments
• Vitiligo, to help repigment the skin
• Certain other skin conditions as advised by a dermatologist, such as some forms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma

HOW IT WORKS

• Methoxsalen makes the skin more sensitive to UVA light
• When exposed to controlled UVA light, it interacts with skin cells to slow down abnormal skin cell growth (in psoriasis)
• In vitiligo, it stimulates pigment-producing cells to help restore skin colour

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a general sunscreen or tanning agent
• It should not be used for ordinary sun exposure without medical supervision
• It is not used to treat infections, allergies, or other unrelated skin problems
• It is not a stand-alone treatment — it must be combined with prescribed UVA light exposure

How to Use Methoxsalen U.S.P

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually a few hours before your scheduled UVA light session
• Take with food or milk to reduce stomach upset, unless told otherwise
• Do not increase or decrease the dose or timing on your own
• Wear protective sunglasses that block UVA light for the period advised by your doctor after taking this medicine
• Avoid sun exposure (natural or artificial) other than the prescribed treatment session

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• If you miss a dose before your scheduled light therapy session, contact your treatment centre or doctor before proceeding
• Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed one
• Do not undergo the UVA light session without taking the prescribed dose beforehand, as this can cause harm or lack of benefit

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture
• Keep in the original container, tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Headache
• Itching or burning sensation on skin
• Redness of skin after light exposure

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Dizziness
• Nervousness or difficulty sleeping
• Skin peeling
• Increased sensitivity to sunlight for some days after treatment

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe blistering or burning of skin
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing
• Severe eye pain or vision changes
• Signs of liver problems such as yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine
• Unusual skin growths or changes appearing much later after treatment

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to methoxsalen or related psoralen compounds
• Have a history of certain skin cancers, unless specifically advised by your doctor
• Have certain eye conditions like cataracts, unless cleared by your doctor
• Have porphyria or other conditions of extreme light sensitivity

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have liver disease
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of skin cancer or precancerous skin lesions
• Are taking other medicines that increase sun sensitivity
• Have any eye problems

• Other drugs that increase photosensitivity, such as certain antibiotics, diuretics, or retinoids
• Other topical or systemic treatments for psoriasis or vitiligo
