Minocycline — Uses and Benefits

Minocycline is prescribed to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria and to manage moderate to severe acne.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Acne vulgaris (moderate to severe)
• Respiratory tract infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Certain sexually transmitted infections
• Rickettsial infections and some rare bacterial infections

HOW IT WORKS

• It blocks bacterial protein synthesis, which stops bacteria from growing and multiplying
• This allows the body's own defence system to fight off and clear the infection
• It works only against bacteria, not viruses or fungi

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Common cold, flu, or other viral infections
• Fungal infections
• As a painkiller or for non-infectious skin conditions
• Without a doctor's prescription, even if symptoms seem similar to a past infection

How to Use Minocycline

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with a full glass of water
• May be taken with or without food, but taking with food can reduce stomach upset
• Avoid taking with milk, antacids, or iron/calcium supplements, as they reduce absorption; separate timing by a few hours
• Do not lie down immediately after taking it, to avoid throat irritation
• Complete the full course even if you feel better, unless your doctor advises otherwise

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Discard old or discoloured tablets/capsules as directed by your pharmacist

Minocycline — Side Effects

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Loss of appetite
• Dizziness or lightheadedness

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Skin discolouration with long-term use
• Headache
• Sensitivity to sunlight
• Mouth or tongue discolouration
• Vaginal itching or discharge (due to fungal overgrowth)

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling
• Yellowing of skin or eyes (signs of liver problems)
• Severe headache with blurred vision (signs of raised brain pressure)
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing
• Severe, watery, or bloody diarrhoea
• Unusual bruising or bleeding

Minocycline — Safety Information and Precautions

This medicine is available only with a doctor's prescription in India.

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to minocycline or other tetracycline antibiotics
• Are pregnant, as it can affect the baby's developing bones and teeth
• Are breastfeeding, unless advised by your doctor
• Are a child under the age recommended by your doctor (usually below 8 years), as it can cause permanent tooth discolouration

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have liver or kidney disease
• Have a history of raised brain pressure or severe headaches
• Are taking blood thinners
• Have myasthenia gravis or a similar muscle-weakness condition
• Are planning surgery or dental treatment soon

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Antacids, calcium, iron, or magnesium supplements
• Oral contraceptive pills (may reduce effectiveness)
• Blood thinners such as warfarin
• Retinoid-based acne medicines (increased risk of raised brain pressure)
• Other antibiotics or vaccines, especially live vaccines

It is best to avoid alcohol as it may increase stomach upset and reduce the medicine's effectiveness.

Will this medicine make my skin more sensitive to the sun?

Yes, it can increase sun sensitivity, so use sunscreen and protective clothing while on treatment.

Can I stop the medicine once my symptoms improve?

• No, you should complete the full course as prescribed to prevent the infection from returning or bacteria becoming resistant.
