Montelukast — Uses and Benefits

Montelukast is mainly used to manage asthma and allergic rhinitis (nasal allergy) symptoms.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Long-term control and prevention of asthma symptoms
• Prevention of exercise-induced breathing difficulty
• Relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itching)
• Relief of symptoms of year-round (perennial) allergic rhinitis

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks leukotrienes, chemicals released by the body during an allergic or asthma response
• Leukotrienes cause swelling, mucus production and tightening of airway muscles
• By blocking them, montelukast reduces airway inflammation and allergy symptoms

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not for treating a sudden asthma attack or acute breathlessness
• Not a rescue inhaler substitute; does not replace fast-acting bronchodilators
• Not used for infections, cough due to cold, or general fever
• Not a cure for asthma or allergy, only helps control symptoms

How to Use Montelukast

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily in the evening
• Can be taken with or without food
• Chewable tablets should be chewed, not swallowed whole, unless your doctor says otherwise
• Continue taking it regularly even if you feel well, as it works best with continued daily use
• Do not stop suddenly without speaking to your doctor
• Do not use this medicine to treat a sudden asthma attack

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight
• Keep in the original packaging until use
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Stomach pain
• Tiredness or fatigue
• Mild fever
• Cough

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Dizziness
• Skin rash or itching
• Dry mouth
• Indigestion or nausea
• Restlessness or trouble sleeping

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing
• Mood or behaviour changes, anxiety, depression, agitation or unusual dreams
• Thoughts of self-harm
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to montelukast or any ingredient in the tablet
• Are using it as the sole treatment for an acute asthma attack

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have liver disease
• Have a history of mental health issues, mood changes or depression
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Have phenylketonuria (some chewable tablets contain aspartame)
• Are already on other asthma medicines including inhalers or steroids

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Phenobarbital and phenytoin (used for seizures)
• Rifampicin (antibiotic)
• Other asthma or allergy medicines
• Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking
