Nitroglycerin 2.5mg is mainly prescribed for people with angina, a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Prevention of angina (chest pain) episodes in people with coronary artery disease
• Long-term management of chronic stable angina
• Sometimes used to reduce workload on the heart in certain heart conditions, as decided by your doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Relaxes and widens blood vessels, especially veins
• Reduces the amount of work the heart has to do to pump blood
• Improves blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle, reducing chest pain

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller for general body pain
• It does not treat a heart attack that is already happening in place of emergency care
• It is not meant to be used as an immediate rescue medicine for sudden severe chest pain (fast-acting nitrate forms are used for that)
• It does not cure heart disease; it only helps manage symptoms

How to Use Nitroglycerin 2.5mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day
• Swallow the sustained-release tablet or capsule whole with water; do not crush or chew it
• Try to take it at the same time(s) each day for best results
• Your doctor may advise a nitrate-free period during the day to prevent your body building tolerance to the medicine
• Do not stop taking it suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can worsen angina

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time for your next dose
• If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, sunlight, and moisture
• Keep the container tightly closed
• Keep out of reach and sight of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache (often the first few days)

• Low blood pressure, especially on standing up

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to nitroglycerin or other nitrates
• Are taking medicines for erectile dysfunction such as sildenafil, tadalafil, or vardenafil
• Have severe low blood pressure or are in a state of shock
• Have severe anaemia or increased pressure inside the skull

• Have low blood pressure or tend to feel dizzy on standing
• Have had a recent heart attack
• Have liver or kidney disease
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Drink alcohol regularly
