Ondansetron 4mg is used to control nausea and vomiting in various medical situations.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Preventing and treating nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy
- Preventing and treating nausea and vomiting caused by radiotherapy
- Preventing and treating nausea and vomiting after surgery (post-operative)
- Sometimes used for severe vomiting in pregnancy, only under strict medical supervision
HOW IT WORKS
- Blocks serotonin (5-HT3) receptors in the brain and gut
- Serotonin is released when the body is exposed to chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, and this triggers the vomiting reflex
- By blocking these receptors, ondansetron reduces the urge to vomit and feeling of nausea
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- Not used for routine motion sickness
- Not a general painkiller or digestive medicine
- Not used for vomiting caused by infections unless specifically advised by a doctor
- Not meant for long-term daily use without medical supervision
How to Use Ondansetron 4mg
HOW TO TAKE IT
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually before chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery
- Can be taken with or without food
- If using the orally disintegrating tablet, let it dissolve on the tongue without chewing or swallowing whole
- Do not increase the dose or frequency on your own
- Complete the course as advised, even if nausea improves
IF YOU MISS A DOSE
- If this medicine is being taken on a fixed schedule (such as before chemotherapy), inform your doctor or nurse rather than taking an extra dose
- If prescribed for regular use and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose
- Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one
STORAGE
- Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
- Keep out of reach of children
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
- Keep injections as advised by the pharmacist, usually protected from light

- Severe stomach pain or bloating
- Signs of serotonin syndrome such as agitation, muscle stiffness, high fever, confusion (especially if combined with other serotonin-affecting medicines)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
- Are allergic to ondansetron or similar medicines
- Are taking apomorphine (a medicine for Parkinson's disease), as this combination can cause serious low blood pressure
- Have a known heart rhythm problem called congenital long QT syndrome
TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU
- Have any heart disease or irregular heartbeat
- Have liver disease
- Have low levels of potassium or magnesium in blood
- Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
- Have a history of bowel blockage
MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT
- Medicines that affect heart rhythm (such as certain antibiotics and antiarrhythmics)
- Other serotonin-affecting medicines such as antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs), which may increase risk of serotonin syndrome
- Apomorphine
- Strong medicines that affect liver enzymes, such as some anti-seizure drugs
