Oxaliplatin — Uses and Benefits

Oxaliplatin is mainly used in the treatment of colorectal cancer, either after surgery to reduce the chance of the cancer coming back, or in advanced/metastatic cases to control cancer growth.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of colon and rectal cancer, usually combined with other chemotherapy medicines
• Prevention of cancer recurrence after surgical removal of colon cancer
• Sometimes used for certain other gastrointestinal cancers as decided by the oncologist

HOW IT WORKS

• It is a platinum compound that binds to the DNA inside cancer cells
• This damages the DNA structure and stops the cancer cells from dividing and multiplying
• Since cancer cells cannot repair this damage easily, they eventually die

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used for minor or non-cancerous illnesses
• It is not a pain-relief or infection-treating medicine
• It is not effective against all types of cancer and should only be used for cancers where doctors have confirmed benefit

How to Use Oxaliplatin

HOW TO TAKE IT

• This medicine is given only as an intravenous (IV) infusion by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or cancer care centre
• It is never taken by mouth or self-injected at home
• The dose, frequency, and duration of treatment are decided by the oncologist based on the type of cancer, body weight, and blood test results
• Treatment is usually given in cycles with rest periods in between to allow the body to recover
• Blood tests are done before each cycle to check if it is safe to continue

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Since this medicine is given under medical supervision at a hospital, missed doses are rescheduled by the treating doctor
• Contact your hospital or cancer centre immediately if you are unable to attend a scheduled infusion appointment
• Do not try to make up for a missed dose on your own

STORAGE

• This medicine is stored and handled only by hospital staff under controlled conditions
• Patients and caregivers do not need to store this medicine at home
• It should be protected from light and kept as per hospital pharmacy guidelines until use

Oxaliplatin — Side Effects

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea and vomiting
• Numbness, tingling, or cold-sensitivity in hands, feet, mouth and throat
• Fatigue and weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Diarrhoea or constipation

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Mouth sores
• Hair thinning
• Taste changes
• Mild fever
• Injection site pain or redness

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face/lips/throat, breathing difficulty, or skin rash
• Signs of infection such as high fever, chills, or persistent sore throat
• Severe or persistent diarrhoea or vomiting leading to dehydration
• Difficulty breathing or throat tightness during or after infusion
• Unusual bleeding, bruising, or blood in urine/stool
• Severe or worsening numbness/weakness affecting daily activities

This is a prescription-only medicine in India and is administered strictly under the supervision of a qualified oncologist in a hospital setting.

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to oxaliplatin or other platinum-based medicines
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by your oncologist
• Have severe kidney disease without medical clearance
• Have a history of severe nerve damage that has not been evaluated by your doctor

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have kidney or liver problems
• Have numbness, tingling, or nerve-related conditions
• Have a history of heart disease
• Are planning pregnancy or are sexually active, as this medicine can affect fertility and the unborn baby
• Have had allergic reactions to chemotherapy medicines before
• Are taking any other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal medicines

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other chemotherapy drugs (effects may be combined or increased)
• Live vaccines, which should generally be avoided during treatment
• Medicines affecting kidney function
• Blood thinners, as bleeding risk may increase

Will I lose my hair with this medicine?

Hair thinning can occur but complete hair loss is less common with this particular medicine compared to some other chemotherapy drugs.

Can I drink cold water after treatment?

Many patients are advised to avoid cold drinks and cold objects for a few days as this medicine can cause increased sensitivity to cold.

How many cycles of treatment will I need?
