Permethrin 5% w/v is mainly used to treat scabies, a skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin and cause intense itching and rash. It is also used to treat lice infestations of the scalp or body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of scabies infestation
• Treatment of head lice or body lice
• Reducing itching and skin irritation caused by mites

HOW IT WORKS

• Acts on the nerve cells of mites and lice, causing paralysis and death
• Kills both adult parasites and, to some extent, their eggs
• Applied directly to affected skin or hair for local action

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for fungal skin infections
• Not used for bacterial skin infections
• Not used for allergic skin rashes unrelated to mites or lice
• Not effective against bed bugs or mosquito bites

How to Use Permethrin (5% W/V)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• For external use only; not to be swallowed
• Apply as a thin layer over the affected skin or scalp as directed by your doctor
• Leave on the skin for the recommended time before washing off, usually overnight or as advised
• Wash hands thoroughly after application unless hands are being treated
• Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes
• Use clean clothes and bedding after treatment to prevent reinfestation

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Apply as soon as you remember if it was part of a repeat treatment schedule
• If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one and continue as advised
• Do not apply extra amounts to make up for a missed application

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep the container tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Mild burning or stinging at the site of application
• Itching that may temporarily increase after applying
• Redness of the skin
• Dryness or mild irritation

• Mild rash
• Swelling in the treated area

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe skin blistering or peeling
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, or throat
• Difficulty breathing
• Severe itching or rash spreading beyond the treated area
