This medicine is mainly used for the long-term control of epilepsy and seizure disorders.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Prevention and control of generalized seizures (fits)
• Control of partial (focal) seizures
• Long-term maintenance therapy in known epilepsy patients
• Sometimes used to control seizures after brain surgery or head injury, as advised by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Phenobarbitone slows down brain activity by enhancing calming (GABA) signals
• Phenytoin stabilises overactive nerve cells by controlling sodium movement in and out of them
• Together they reduce the frequency and severity of seizures

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for a single, one-time fit due to fever in children
• Not used for anxiety, sleep problems, or as a general sedative
• Not a painkiller and does not treat headache or body pain
• Not used to stop a seizure that is already happening (emergency injections are used for that)

How to Use Phenobarbitone (50mg) + Phenytoin (100mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day
• Swallow the tablet with water; can be taken with or without food, but taking with food may reduce stomach upset
• Take at the same time(s) every day to maintain steady levels in the blood
• Do not stop the medicine suddenly, even if you feel better, as this can trigger seizures
• Do not change the dose on your own

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• If you miss several doses, inform your doctor

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Keep in the original container/strip
