Phenytoin is mainly used to treat and prevent seizures (fits) associated with epilepsy.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Control of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures
• Control of complex partial (focal) seizures
• Prevention of seizures during and after brain surgery or head injury
• Treatment of status epilepticus (prolonged seizures) under medical supervision

HOW IT WORKS

• It stabilises the outer covering (membrane) of nerve cells in the brain
• It reduces the spread of abnormal electrical activity that causes seizures
• It helps prevent nerve cells from firing too rapidly or repeatedly

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and does not treat headaches or migraines directly
• It is not used for absence seizures (petit mal), as it can worsen them
• It is not a cure for epilepsy; it only controls seizures while being taken
• It should not be used for anxiety, sleep problems, or general nerve pain without specific doctor advice

How to Use Phenytoin (50mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day
• Take with or after food to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow tablets/capsules whole with water; shake liquid form well before use
• Take at the same time(s) each day to maintain steady levels in the body
• Do not stop suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can trigger seizures
• Continue regular blood tests if advised, to monitor drug levels

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• If you miss multiple doses or are unsure, contact your doctor

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Keep liquid forms tightly closed and check for changes in colour or consistency
