Piperacillin+Tazobactam is used to treat serious and complicated bacterial infections, usually in hospitalised patients.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Severe pneumonia and lung infections
• Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
• Intra-abdominal infections such as peritonitis
• Urinary tract infections
• Infections in the blood (bacteremia/sepsis)
• Infections in patients with weak immunity, including fever with low white blood cell count

HOW IT WORKS

• Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by damaging their cell wall
• Tazobactam blocks enzymes (beta-lactamases) produced by some bacteria that would otherwise destroy piperacillin
• Together they widen the range of bacteria that can be treated effectively

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as flu, common cold, or COVID-19
• Fungal infections
• Minor infections that can be treated with oral antibiotics
• As a general painkiller or fever medicine

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Complete the full course as advised, even if you start feeling better, unless your doctor tells you to stop

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Since this is given in a hospital or clinic setting, inform the nursing staff or doctor immediately if a dose is delayed or missed
• Do not try to make up for a missed dose on your own

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Diarrhoea
• Nausea or vomiting
• Constipation

• Low blood pressure
• Changes in liver enzyme levels seen on blood tests
• Vein inflammation at the injection site

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, and difficulty breathing
• Severe skin reactions with blistering or peeling
• Severe or bloody diarrhoea that does not stop (may indicate a serious gut infection)
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes
• Seizures or confusion
• Signs of kidney problems such as reduced urination or swelling

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
