Pyrazinamide is used to treat active tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the lungs.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of active pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis
• Treatment of other forms of tuberculosis, as part of combination therapy
• Used in the initial intensive phase of TB treatment along with other anti-TB medicines

HOW IT WORKS

• It gets converted inside TB bacteria into an active form that kills the bacteria
• It works best in the acidic environment found inside infected cells and inflamed tissue
• It helps shorten the total duration of TB treatment when combined with other drugs

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used alone to treat TB — always given with other anti-TB medicines
• Not effective against viral or fungal infections
• Not used for latent (inactive) TB infection unless specifically advised by your doctor
• Not a painkiller or fever medicine

How to Use Pyrazinamide 500mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily
• Can be taken with or without food, but taking with food may reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet with water; do not crush unless advised
• Take it at the same time each day along with your other TB medicines
• Do not stop the medicine early even if you feel better — complete the full course

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as scheduled
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Missing doses can make TB treatment less effective and increase risk of drug resistance

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, light, and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the pack

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Severe stomach pain or persistent vomiting
• Severe joint swelling or gout-like pain
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face/lips, difficulty breathing, or severe rash
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
