This medicine is used to treat active tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis
• Treatment of certain forms of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, as advised by your doctor
• Used in the initial intensive phase of the standard TB treatment regimen

HOW IT WORKS

• Rifampicin and Isoniazid kill the TB bacteria by stopping them from making essential proteins and cell wall components
• Pyrazinamide kills bacteria that survive in acidic environments inside cells
• Ethambutol stops bacteria from multiplying by damaging their cell wall
• Together, these four medicines attack the bacteria in different ways, reducing the chance of drug resistance

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for viral or fungal infections
• Not used for ordinary cough, cold or bronchitis
• Not a painkiller or fever medicine
• Not to be used for latent (inactive) TB without doctor's specific advice
• Not to be stopped early even if symptoms improve, as this can cause drug-resistant TB

How to Use Rifampicin 450mg + Isoniazid 300mg + Ethambutol 800mg + Pyrazinamide 750mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily
• Best taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food, unless your doctor advises otherwise
• Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water; do not chew or crush unless instructed
• Complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better, as stopping early can cause the infection to return or become drug-resistant
• Take at the same time every day to maintain steady effect
• Avoid alcohol during treatment as it increases risk of liver problems

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one
• Try to maintain regular dosing as missed doses can affect treatment success

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling

• Swelling of face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
• High fever with body aches

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Ethambutol, Pyrazinamide or any other ingredient
• Have severe active liver disease
• Have optic neuritis (eye nerve inflammation), especially before starting Ethambutol
• Have acute gout, in the case of Pyrazinamide

• Have any liver or kidney disease
• Have diabetes, especially if it affects your eyes
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of gout or high uric acid levels
