Rifampicin 600mg is primarily used to treat tuberculosis (TB) affecting the lungs and other parts of the body. It is almost always given as part of a combination therapy with other anti-TB drugs to prevent resistance.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis
• Treatment of leprosy (in combination with other drugs)
• Prevention of meningococcal disease in people exposed to certain bacteria, as advised by a doctor
• Treatment of certain other bacterial infections as decided by your doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Rifampicin blocks an enzyme bacteria need to make RNA
• This stops bacteria from multiplying and eventually kills them
• It is effective against both fast-growing and slow-growing (dormant) bacteria, which is important in TB treatment

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used for viral infections such as flu or common cold
• It is not used alone for long-term TB treatment due to risk of resistance
• It should not be used to self-treat any infection without a doctor's prescription and proper diagnosis

How to Use Rifampicin 600mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily
• Take on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after food, unless your doctor advises otherwise
• Swallow the tablet or capsule whole with a glass of water
• Do not stop the medicine early even if you feel better; complete the full course as advised
• It is usually taken along with other anti-TB medicines as part of a combination regimen

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your regular schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Try to take doses at the same time each day to avoid missing them

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Keep in the original packaging until ready to use

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Reddish-orange discoloration of urine, sweat, tears and saliva (harmless)
• Nausea and vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Stomach upset or discomfort
• Diarrhoea

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Skin rash or itching
• Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, muscle pain) especially with irregular dosing

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain (signs of liver damage)
• Severe skin reactions such as blistering, peeling skin, or widespread rash
• Breathlessness, wheezing, or swelling of face, lips or throat (allergic reaction)
• Unusual bleeding, bruising, or persistent fever
• Reduced urine output or swelling of legs (kidney problems)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to rifampicin or any rifamycin antibiotic
